NNH Team Explores Kidney Disease Mechanisms Through Virtual Reality

March 5, 2026

Plattsburgh, NY — Northern Nephrology & Hypertension (NNH) recently hosted an exciting and innovative educational session in partnership with Novartis, bringing cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology into the clinic to explore complex kidney disease pathways in an entirely new way. During the session, NNH physicians, nurses, and staff participated in an immersive VR learning experience that allowed them to step inside the microscopic world of kidney disease. Using advanced VR headsets, participants were able to visualize the complement system, inflammatory pathways, and the role of endothelin-1 signaling—two critical mechanisms that play an important role in several kidney diseases. Rather than simply viewing diagrams on slides, the team interacted with three-dimensional models of the kidney, exploring how these molecular systems contribute to damage in conditions such as glomerular disease and progressive chronic kidney disease. The technology allowed participants to see how these pathways operate dynamically, helping translate complex biochemical processes into intuitive visual understanding. Bringing Science to Life The VR platform allowed the NNH team to observe how complement activation can drive inflammation and tissue injury, and how endothelin-1 signaling influences vascular tone, fibrosis, and kidney function. These pathways are central to several emerging therapies currently being developed to treat kidney disease. “Seeing these mechanisms in three dimensions was remarkable,” said members of the NNH team following the session. “It transforms abstract molecular biology into something you can actually experience.” By visualizing these pathways interactively, clinicians can better understand how new medications are designed to interrupt disease processes and protect kidney function. Preparing for the Next Generation of Kidney Therapies Advances in molecular medicine are rapidly transforming nephrology. New therapies targeting the complement cascade and endothelin pathways are currently being studied and introduced for diseases such as: IgA nephropathy Complement-mediated kidney diseases Proteinuric kidney disease Progressive chronic kidney disease Educational programs like this ensure that clinicians remain at the forefront of these developments, allowing them to translate emerging science into improved patient care. A Commitment to Continuous Learning At Northern Nephrology & Hypertension, education is central to the mission of delivering high-quality kidney care to patients throughout the North Country. The VR session highlighted how technology can revolutionize medical education and deepen understanding of complex disease biology. Experiences like this not only strengthen the clinical knowledge of the NNH team but ultimately help ensure that patients benefit from the latest advances in kidney medicine. As innovation continues to reshape nephrology, NNH remains committed to exploring new ways to learn, teach, and deliver cutting-edge care to the communities we serve.
