Northern Nephrology & Hypertension is excited to share a slightly different kind of news about our own Dr. Craig Hurwitz! Dr. Hurwitz was recently selected as StompLight’s Artist of the Month, highlighting his lifelong love of guitar, live music, and the special role music has played across generations of the Hurwitz family. The feature came about after StompLight’s CEO learned about Craig’s unusual combination of careers as a nephrologist and lifelong performing musician. What especially caught his attention was the Hurwitz family’s shared love of music and their “Hurwitz Fam Jam” performances, where Craig is often joined on stage by his wife, Dina, sons Jack and Elliot, and daughter Hallie. Craig began playing guitar as a child and continued performing throughout college, medical school, residency, and fellowship. Even while building his career in nephrology and raising a family, music remained an important part of his life. Today, he continues to perform regularly throughout the North Country, both on his own and alongside family and friends. For Craig, there is also a surprising connection between medicine and music. “Both are about listening, connecting with people, and being present.” The StompLight feature explores Craig’s musical journey, his love of blues, Southern rock, jazz, acoustic guitar and altered tunings, as well as the joy of watching his children become musicians themselves. As Craig says, some of his favorite performances today are the ones where the entire family gets to share the stage. And while the feature may focus on guitars and stage lights rather than kidneys, Craig still managed to get in an important NNH message: “My other passion is the kidney, which is obviously the best organ!” Congratulations to Dr. Hurwitz on being selected as StompLight’s Artist of the Month. It is a fun recognition of a lifelong passion and a reminder that some of the best connections happen both inside and outside the office.
