Northern Nephrology & Hypertension would like to recognize Michaela Gillis for another outstanding summer as a clinical intern with our team. This was Michaela’s second summer internship at NNH, joining us during her break from Loyola University, where she is entering her junior year on the pre-med track. Over the past two summers, Michaela has become a valued part of the NNH team. Her patient care skills and ability to communicate with patients are exceptional. Just as impressive is her genuine curiosity about medicine. Michaela is constantly asking thoughtful questions and looking beyond what is happening to understand why, developing a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind kidney disease and the conditions we treat. This summer, Michaela also played a major role in an important NNH quality initiative examining our practice experience with the Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) in the management of patients with advanced stage 4–5 chronic kidney disease. She helped organize and review our practice data as we evaluate how KFRE-based risk assessment can improve the timing of advanced CKD education, treatment planning, and preparation for kidney replacement therapy. We plan to develop this work for submission to a nephrology conference in 2027. As Michaela heads back to Loyola for her junior year and prepares to take the MCAT, the entire NNH team wishes her continued success. We look forward to watching you continue to grow and advance through what we know will be an exciting career in healthcare.
